SINGLE AUTHOR COLLECTION COMPETITION
Iron Horse Literary Review is pleased to announce the winner of our 2nd Annual Single-Author Competition, Eric Neuenfeldt.
Eric Neuenfeldt is the founding editor of Arroyo Literary Review and began serving as the associate editor of Cimarron Review in January. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in PANK, Permafrost, Zaum, and other publications. He is currently a Burris Fellow at Oklahoma State University, and he divides his time between Stillwater, Oklahoma, and Northern California.
Of his collection, Fall Ends Tomorrow, judge Mark Richard writes:
Eric Neuenfeldt slowly deep-freezes his characters in the black ice of a Milwaukee winter: the paint-huffing bike mechanics, the alcoholic teachers performing phantom lunch duty, parents with children living in storage units, a manure-shoveler trying to save his addicted brother from the abyss. Neuenfeldt gives us the alien landscapes that reside in all of our familiar rust belt cities if we would only look beyond the concrete highway barriers or open the doors to peek inside the dead factories. In this world, these residents all come down with the stumbles, cop and priest alike, which is only a symptom of a more fatal affliction. In sharp pastiche, Neuenfeldt knowingly renders these people’s nearnesses to death, which is what we share with them, unknowingly. His characters are not even bottom-dwellers, they are basement- and ditchbank-dwellers living in all that dirty snow and filthy ice. The trick is, come spring, who will shake it off and stumble on in the thaw, and who will remain fixed and disintegrate into the permanent landscape?
Join us in congratulating Eric Neuenfeldt. He will receive $1,000 for his winning manuscript, and Iron Horse Press will publish the collection in June 2010.
